He was born into an eminent ecclesiastical family on 14 May 1834〔His father was the Rev Gavin Lang; his 3rd son was the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1928 to 1942, and his 5th Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland from 1935 to 1936 > “Who was Who” 1897-2007 London, A & C Black, 2007 ISBN 9780199540877〕 and educated at Glasgow University. He was Minister at Aberdeen, Fyvie, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
